BAYS Opti Winners - Tiburon Regatta - 2008
What Kind of Optimist Sailing Can I Do at PYSF?

  1. Beginners - If you want to learn to sail, then the Optimist is a great way to get started. You should be at least 7 years old but many kids start at a later age. The upper limit is that you must be younger than 16. PYSF has Learn to Sail Opti summer classes (click here for more info).

  1. Green Fleet Novice - PYSF has a Green Fleet Novice Sailing Team that you may be able to qualify for after you have learned the basics of sailing and you want to continue to develop your sailing skills. As a Green Fleet Novice sailor you may also have the opportunity to sail in some of the sailing regattas held at PYSF and around the bay area. Or you can just practice your sailing skills by sailing with the rest of the Green Fleet at PYSF. Many Green Fleet Sailors also attend the summer classes to hone their skills and to get some more concentrated sailing in over the 5 day course.

  1. Green Fleet Advanced - If you have developed your sailing skills well, you may get an opportunity to move up to the Green Fleet Advanced team. Our Green Fleet Advanced team has mastered all the basic sailing skills and has started to developed more advanced sailing skills. As a member of the Green Fleet Advanced team, you will have the opportunity to sail at regattas at PYSF and the bay area and you may also have an opportunity to sail at other regattas outside the bay area.

  1. Championship Fleet - Once you are well on your way to developing advanced sailing skills in an Opti, you may qualify to join the Championship Fleet. These are the best Opti sailors at PYSF and some of our Championship Fleet sailors are ranked as some of the best Opti sailors in California. Some of our Championship Fleet team qualified and attended the Opti National Team Racing Trials in Connecticut for 2009 and most of our Championship Fleet has also qualified for Opti Nation Team Trails in Houston in April 2010.

Opti Sailing Progression
If you are new to sailing, the thought of racing at a regatta may be a little scary. You may wonder what the point is of racing, if all you want to do is to have fun on the water. Racing can be fun too, and will help you improve faster. You will develop confidence in yourself, and find it a rewarding experience.

The Optimist is a racing dinghy, and helps young sailors develop essential boat handling skills that can be the foundation of future international dinghy sailors. Many Olympic sailors have started in the Opti.
